Mihwangsa, located west of Dalmasan (489m), known as the Geumgangsan of the southern provinces, and the southernmost temple on the Korean Peninsula, was founded in 749, the 8th year of King Gyeongdeok of Silla. It once flourished to the extent of hosting as many as twelve hermitages, but after the monks who had set out a hundred years earlier to restore it were shipwrecked at sea, it gradually fell into decline. This place, which had been empty for a long time, began to breathe again in 1989 when monks Jiun, Hyeongong, and Geumgang came to visit. After more than ten years of reconstruction, the temple now stands with its halls—Myeongbujeon, Daeungbojeon (Treasure), and Eungjindang (Treasure)—neatly arranged, renewing its reputation as one of the most beautiful temples in Korea. Mihwangsa Temple always offers a fantastic view, where the setting sun over the West Sea blends with the jagged rock formations of Dalmasan. In particular, the foundation stones of Daeungbojeon are engraved with sea creatures such as turtles and crabs, which are rarely seen elsewhere, adding to their interest.
