A citizen-participatory historical and cultural festival that offers a modern reinterpretation of Yulgok Yi I’s thought and philosophy
This is the historic site of Yulgok Yi I (1536–1584), a Confucian scholar and statesman of the mid-Joseon period. Master Yi I was a figure who further developed the scholarship of Toegye Yi Hwang and laid the foundation for Joseon Neo-Confucianism, distinct from Chinese Neo-Confucianism, leaving a great contribution to the history of Korean thought. The Paju Yi I Historic Site, where Jaun Seowon dedicated to Yulgok Yi I and the family burial grounds including the tombs of Yulgok Yi I and Shin Saimdang are gathered in one place, is a representative site of the relics related to Yulgok Yi I, and holds great significance as a place where cultural heritage originating from a single individual is gathered. Within the historic site lie the family burial grounds of Yulgok Seonsaeng and others, as well as Jaun Seowon, where his memorial tablet is enshrined, located on the slopes of Jaun Mountain. The family burial area includes the graves of Yulgok and his wife, Lady Noh of Goksan, as well as the joint graves of his parents, Lee Won-su and Shin Saimdang, the grave of his older brother Lee Seon, and the grave of his son Lee Gyeong-rim, forming the central burial area, while the remaining fa…
