The only festival in Korea specialized in Onggi pottery
In Korea, the world’s only country that produces earthenware, Oegosan Onggi Village in Ulju-gun, Ulsan Metropolitan City, which produces more than 50% of the nation’s earthenware, is the largest folk earthenware village in the country and a cradle of tradition and culture that has preserved the wisdom and ingenuity of our ancestors to this day. In this village, people began firing the pottery used today as early as the 1950s, and it became known as a naturally blessed site for pottery making. From the 1960s and 70s, more than 350 potters and potters from all over the country gathered to produce and export pottery not only to Seoul but also to foreign countries such as the United States and Japan, and in the 1980s, it was introduced in booklets and flourished to the point that foreign potters came to visit. Since the 1980s, due to industrialization and the resulting shortage of demand for Onggi, as well as declining interest in Onggi’s traditional culture, about 40 households out of 128 now work in Onggi businesses, continuing the tradition.
