The Wanggung-ri site, located in Wanggung-myeon, Iksan City, Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province, was constructed during the reign of King Mu, the 30th ruler of Baekje (600–641), and was later transformed into a temple. In the late Baekje period, Iksan’s royal administrative process is understood, along with Sabi (Buyeo), as a corridor serving as the center of politics, economy, and culture. The Baekje royal palace was built on a low hill at the end of a ridge originating from Yonghwasan. According to findings confirmed through comprehensive excavation surveys since 1989, this is a complex site that was originally built as a royal palace in the late Baekje period, used for a certain period of time, after which the important palace buildings were dismantled and replaced by a pagoda, a main hall, an auditorium, and a temple.
