The Suyeong region has long been rich in fishery resources, making it a region with a well-developed fishing industry. After the establishment of the Gyeongsang Left Naval Command in the Joseon period, problems arose in supplying provisions as naval forces gathered, and accordingly, the naval commander ordered the inactive navy to join fishermen in fishing. By providing fishing vessels, the fishermen, and by supplying navigation skills and labor, the navy, local fisheries were able to develop further. As the catch increased, the supply of decomposed seaweed to the navy also became more regular. In the 11th year of King Hyeonjong’s reign (1670), a fishing office (eobang) was established within the fortress to promote and encourage fishing and to provide guidance on fishing techniques. “Jwasuyeong Eobangnori,” a play performance that reenacts the fishing work of that time, is now designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage and is preserved and passed down.
