Since its inception in 1997, the Yeongam Wangin Cultural Festival has been held every spring against the backdrop of the Wangin Park historic site as a representative cultural tourism festival of South Korea with a 29-year history. At the pinnacle of ancient East Asian cultural exchange stood Dr. Wangin. Baekje’s advanced culture and Confucian scriptures crossed the Korea Strait through Wangin and reached the Japanese archipelago, and the teachings he transmitted became more than mere knowledge, serving as the fundamental driving force behind the birth of the “Asuka culture,” the golden age of ancient Japanese culture. Wangin’s steadfast scholarly knowledge, the smoothly flowing Yeongsan River, and Sangdaepo symbolize a wave of exchange that spread culture across the sea. Here, we reaffirm that the roots of Asuka culture lie in Yeongam.
