The site of Sajik Park was originally where Sajikdan stood. Sajikdan is a place, since the Three Kingdoms period, where people offered sacrifices to the gods of the land and the gods of grain in hopes of the nation’s peace and a bountiful harvest. In 1894, the ritual was abolished, and in the late 1960s, when Sajik Zoo was built, Sajikdan was demolished. Later, as public opinion grew in favor of restoring Sajikdan to its original state, the zoo was moved to Uchi Park in 1991 and Sajikdan was restored, leading to the revival of the Sajik Festival in April 1994 after 100 years. Sajik Park is well landscaped with various trees and flowers, and especially around April 15 each year, the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. Around this time, the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City installed street lamps at night so that citizens could enjoy the cherry blossoms even after dark. It has now established itself as the most popular resting place for citizens. There is also a free observation tower that overlooks the entire view of Sajik Park.
