Azalea Colony Climb + Mountain Spirit Ritual + Trail Race
As its name suggests, Heungguksa Temple on Yeongchwisan Mountain was built to pray for the prosperity of the nation, on the idea that when the country flourishes the temple flourishes, and when the temple flourishes so does the country. Located near the Yeosu national industrial complex, Heungguksa was founded in 1195 by the National Preceptor Bojo, and its grounds hold cultural properties including Daeungjeon Hall, Wontongjeon Hall and Palsangjeon Hall. The Daeungjeon of Heungguksa is notable for its latticed doors, which allow the hall to be opened up entirely; the altar painting behind its main Buddha is designated a treasure, and the graceful form of the Hongyo arched bridge at the temple entrance shows its value in full. There are seven more treasures, including the Daeungjeon altar painting (Yeongsanhoesangdo), the Rocana Buddha hanging scroll, the Water-Moon Avalokitesvara painting, paintings of the 16 arhats, the wooden Sakyamuni triad, the Yeosu Heungguksa bronze bell, the wooden Ksitigarbha triad, and the set of Ten Kings statues with their enshrined relics.
