Gamaksan is the guardian mountain of Geochang, embracing Muchon-ri in Namsang-myeon and Gwajeong-ri in Sinwon-myeon. From the south of the Geochang basin, it flows in a straight line, commanding Daeyongsan to the west and Daedeoksan, Dolmajangsan, and Maebongsan to the east. At Gamak Pyeongjeon at the mountain's summit is the KBS and MBC TV relay tower built in June 1983. The name is Gammoe, meaning 'sacred mountain, divine mountain, great mountain,' symbolizing a goddess. Famous legends of Gamaksan include the story that King Heongang of Silla cured his palsy with the spring water of Yeonsusa, and the Yeonsusa ginkgo tree that holds the story of a nun who became a monastic from a Goryeo royal descendant and her posthumous child. Yeonsusa is a temple with a deep connection to springs, as its name includes the character for 'water.' As a famous mountain in the southern part of Geochang-gun, surrounded by Jirisan, Deogyusan, and Gayasan, it boasts a view of the full scenery of Geochang-eup and Hapcheon Dam nearby.
