Hongwon Port lies on the way to Chunjangdae Beach, a beautiful place for sea fishing and wild-caught sashimi, with a breakwater reaching into the sea and red-and-white lighthouses. Smaller than the famous ports, it has an unusually small tidal range among West Coast ports, so many fishing boats come and go. What makes Hongwon Port most famous is the autumn gizzard shad (jeoneo). Old texts say 'an autumn gizzard shad's head holds three doe of sesame,' and there's even a saying that 'a daughter-in-law who has left home returns at the smell of grilling jeoneo'—it is counted the best of West Coast fish. Though caught year-round, it is reputed best from late September to early November, and Hongwon Port, with Gwangyang Port in Jeonnam, lands the most. Every year from late September it holds a two-week Gizzard Shad Festival.
