Civilization that flowered on Jeju, a volcanic island of the Eurasian plate, flowed in not only from the sea but also arrived from northern mainland civilizations. All kinds of elements scattered, gathered on Jeju, mixed and transformed, creating today's Jeju—its ecology, geography, and shape of life. The 5th Jeju Biennale, entering its 10th year, focuses on Jeju's dynamic process of meeting northern civilization and scattering (heokkeuda), gathering (modakchida), and transforming (iyahong). For this, the biennale takes 'Iyahong'—the refrain of the Iyahong folk song that flowed in from the mainland to become another of Jeju's native folk songs—as its keyword and core concept. Through Jeju, where the principles of climate and sustenance dwell, the biennale seeks to present the ways of survival and aesthetics that objects, nature, human life, and divinity have shaped together.
