This fortress, called Geoyeolseong in the Three Kingdoms period and Chokseokseong in the Goryeo period, was renamed Jinju Fortress by the Joseon dynasty. The stone fortress has a circumference of about 1,760 meters and a height of about 5 to 8 meters. Inside the fortress, there were three wells and three springs, and there was also a military storehouse. According to the gate inscription of Haryun (1347–1416) in the Dongguk Yeoji Seungnam, only the old site of the fortress remains, so it is unclear when it was built. However, because Japanese pirate invasions were frequent, it is said that in the 5th year of King U of Goryeo (1379), the magistrate of Jinju, Kim Jung-gwang, was ordered to stone the fortress wall. Jinju Fortress, rebuilt and fortified at the end of Goryeo as a stronghold against Japanese pirates, became a gateway that blocked the Japanese forces trying to advance into Honam when the Imjin War broke out in the 25th year of King Seonjo of Joseon (1592).
