Jagalchi Market is a coastal market spanning Nampo-dong and Chungmu-dong in Jung-gu, bordering the city center, and thus combines both market and entertainment functions. Along with the nearby Shindonga Seafood Market and the dried seafood market, it is one of the markets that best represents the character of the Busan region. There is a theory that the place name Jagalchi originated from the Jagal coast, and another theory suggests it comes from the species name “Jagalchi,” which is said to be widely traded as a live fish because it is said to be caught only from the Jagal coast. Along the roadside by Jagalchi Beach, you can see the rare sight of middle-aged women selling mackerel, sea squirts, whale meat, and more. On the first floor of the Shindonga Seafood Market, which opened in 1980, you can buy live fish and enjoy freshly prepared, delicious sashimi made on the spot. On the second and third floors, dried seafood and other marine products are sold, and there is a fish restaurant located there, making it a rising new landmark of Jagalchi Market.
