Buinsa, on the southern mid-slope of Palgongsan, is a branch temple of Donghwasa, head temple of the Jogye Order's 9th district. As its founding period and history are little known, its founding date and location are much debated. The present Buinsa, said to be founded in the early 7th century, enshrines the portrait of Silla's Queen Seondeok, and the fact that Sinmu-dong residents, the temple, and the Gyeongju Kim clan hold a Queen Seondeok memorial rite on the 15th of the 3rd lunar month each year hints at its history. The old temple site is now a vineyard, but a flagpole support remains 200m south of the temple, showing its former prosperity. The present Buinsa was rebuilt in 1959 after burning in the Korean War. In Goryeo it flourished enough to host the country's only monks' market, and Jeong Do-jeon's records note it as a great temple on Palgongsan. Widely known as the carving site of the Goryeo Chojo Tripitaka, the roughly 10,000-volume Chojo Tripitaka completed from around 1013 to 1099 was later enshrined here—a nation-protecting temple that sought to overcome foreign invasion.
