Palgongsan is a majestic mountain rising about 20 km northeast of the center of Daegu Metropolitan City, where the Taebaek mountain range bursts forth to the south and then abruptly stops at the confluence of the Nakdong and Geumho Rivers, with its eastern and western peaks standing shoulder to shoulder around Birobong, which rises to 1,192 meters above sea level. Administratively, it covers a total area of 125.232 square kilometers, bounded by four cities and counties: Dong-gu of Daegu Metropolitan City, Gunwi County, Yeongcheon City, Gyeongsan City, and Chilgok County. In the Silla period, Palgongsan was called Buak, Jungak, or Gongsan, and during the Goryeo period it was only called Gongsan, but in the Joseon period it came to be known by the name Palgongsan as it is today. In addition, as a center of Buddhist culture, this area is dotted with numerous temples, including Donghwasa, the head temple of the 9th district of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, and is also home to many striking rock formations and valleys.
