The Yanggu Unification Hall, opened in 1996, is located in Haean-myeon, Yanggu County, the northernmost point of the Civilian Control Zone. It was built 5 km in front of the 4th Tunnel at the northern end of Punchbowl Basin to serve as an educational site for understanding North Korea’s reality in preparation for reunification and to promote awareness of reunification. The Unification Hall is divided into Exhibition Halls 1 and 2 and a specialty agricultural products sales area. Permanent exhibitions display daily necessities, export goods, and photographs that reveal the reality of North Korea, while the exhibition and sales area for agricultural specialties sells local products and souvenir items. At Tongilgwan Plaza, artist Yoo Young-ho’s “Greeting-man” is on display. It carries meanings of peace, reconciliation, and meeting, and reflects the artist’s hope that one day the North and South will greet each other, come together in harmony, and move forward together toward peaceful reunification.
