장소 소개
This is where Mun Ik-jeom first cultivated cotton in Korea during the reign of King Gongmin at the end of the Goryeo period. In 1363, the 12th year of King Gongmin, Mun Ik-jeom travelled to Yuan China as part of a diplomatic mission and on his return carried cotton seeds home inside a writing brush case. He conducted trial cultivation together with his father-in-law Jeong Cheon-ik, but knowing little of the techniques at first, they managed to keep only a single plant alive. After three years of effort they succeeded, and cotton cultivation spread throughout the country. Until then clothing had been made from silk, ramie and hemp, leaving ordinary people to suffer the cold, so the arrival of cotton brought a revolution in the history of Korean clothing and greatly improved everyday life. Cotton is still grown around the site each year in remembrance of the ancestors.
